Welcome to Portales Book Nook Bookstore located in downtown Portales, New Mexico. We appreciate your visit to our bookstore.
The building was built in the late 1920s when Portales had dirt streets and cowboys drove cattle up the main street. Our store is commonly referred to as a 'shotgun store' in that the store is a large one-room store with a pot belly stove in the back. The town doctor warmed his bones during those cold "Texas Norther" nights next to that ole stove.
We bought the building in 1999 when Hugh Coslett operated "Oscar's Boot Shop". The Boot Shop had been a thriving local icon for nearly 50 years. We still honor the original building architecture. The pressed tin ceilings and 11 foot stucco walls line the inside of the store.
Portales is home to Eastern New Mexico University which boasts approximately 4,000 students and the region's unique Valencia Peanut!
We love Portales and its small town feel. We're proud of the region's 'Wild West' values and independent streak. The restless wind and dashing sky pageantry soothes ones soul.
